This page explain how to save attachments from Gmail on Google Drive, and how to find that same document again.

NOTE: This page assumes the user is using Chrome browser. If using a different web browser, the instructions may be slightly different.

Find Attachment in Gmail

Step 1: Navigate to Gmail

Open your Chrome browser. Click on the address bar at the top of the page. Type www.gmail.com and press the 'Enter' key on your keyboard. This will take you to the Gmail login page.   NOTE:  Most users are logged into Chrome browser, so the login will be skipped. If the user is already logged in, skip ahead to step 3.

Step 2: Log into Gmail

If you are not already logged in, you will see fields to enter your email and password. Type your email address in the first field and click 'Next'. Then, type your password in the second field and click 'Next' again to access your inbox.

Step 3: Open the Email

In your Gmail inbox, find the email that contains the attachment you want to save. Click on this email to open it and view its contents.  The email will usually show with an icon or a paperclip to let you know there is an attachment.

Step 4: Find the Attachment

Scroll down to the bottom of the email to find the attachment. It usually appears as a small icon that represents the type of file attached (e.g., a document icon).

Step 5: Save the Attachment to Google Drive

Hover your mouse over the attachment icon. Look for a Google Drive icon that appears—it looks like a triangle with a plus sign. Click this Google Drive icon to save the attachment directly to your Google Drive. A message may pop up at the bottom left of your screen confirming the file has been saved.

Find Downloaded File in Google Drive

Step 6: Open Google Drive

In a new tab in your Chrome browser, click on the address bar again. Type drive.google.com and press 'Enter'. This will take you to the Google Drive homepage. If prompted, log in with the same Google account you used for Gmail.

Step 7: Locate Your Document in Google Drive

Click on the 'Recent' tab located on the left side of the page under 'My Drive'. This tab displays the most recently added files, and your saved attachment should be listed here.

Step 8: Open Your Document

Find the document you just saved from Gmail in the 'Recent' list. Click on it once to select it. Then, double-click on the document to open it. It will open in a new tab where you can view or edit it as needed.
