Windows 101 - Copy, Paste, and Screenshots
Windows 101: Lesson 10 - Copy, Paste, and Screenshots
In this lesson, we’ll learn simple methods for taking screenshots using the Snipping Tool in Windows 10. While we’ve already covered how to copy and paste files in the previous lesson, it’s important to remember that you should always use copy and paste when possible to save time. Only use the Snipping Tool when you can't copy and paste content directly.
Taking Screenshots with the Snipping Tool
The Snipping Tool is a built-in Windows feature that lets you capture parts of your screen. Screenshots can be useful for sharing what’s on your screen with others or saving important information.
How to Take a Screenshot:
- Open the Snipping Tool:
- Click the Start Menu, type Snipping Tool, and select it from the search results.

- Choose Your Snip Type:
- In the Snipping Tool window, click New. Your screen will fade slightly, and your mouse cursor will change to a crosshair.
- Use your mouse to click and drag a box around the part of the screen you want to capture. When you release the mouse button, the screenshot (or “snip”) will be captured.

- Save or Copy the Screenshot:
- Once you’ve taken the screenshot, you can either save it by clicking the Save button, or copy it to use somewhere else by choosing Edit > Copy.
Using Screenshots in Documents, Emails, and Slack
After taking a screenshot, you can easily paste it into documents, emails, or Slack messages by right-clicking where you want the screenshot to appear and selecting Paste.
By learning how to take and use screenshots, you’ll be able to capture and share important information quickly and easily. Always remember to copy and paste whenever possible before resorting to the Snipping Tool. In the next lesson, we’ll dive into Security Basics, which will help you protect your computer and files.
