Windows 101: Lesson 12 - Google Chrome

In this lesson, we’ll cover how to effectively use Google Chrome for browsing the Internet. You’ll learn about the address bar, tabs, bookmarks, the bookmark toolbar, and useful settings to help you browse efficiently.

What is Google Chrome?

Google Chrome is a web browser, a program that lets you access and view websites. Chrome is one of the most popular browsers because it’s fast, secure, and easy to use.

Address Bar

The address bar is at the top of the browser and is where you can type the address (also called a URL) of the website you want to visit. You can also use the address bar to search the web without needing to visit a search engine first.

How to Use the Address Bar:
  • Go to a website: Type the website’s address (e.g., www.example.com) in the address bar and press Enter.
    • [Placeholder: Image showing typing a website address in the address bar]
  • Search from the address bar: You don’t need to go to a separate search engine page. Simply type what you want to search for (e.g., “best restaurants near me”) in the address bar and press Enter. Google will display search results directly.

Forward, Back, and Refresh Buttons

These three buttons next to the address bar help you navigate the websites you’re visiting:

  • Back Button: Takes you back to the previous page you visited.
  • Forward Button: Takes you forward to the next page (only works if you’ve used the Back button first).
  • Refresh Button: Reloads the current page to make sure you’re seeing the most up-to-date content.

Tabs

Tabs allow you to open multiple websites in the same browser window. This makes it easy to switch between different pages without opening a new window for each one.

How to Use Tabs:
  • Opening a new tab: To open a new tab, click the small plus (+) icon at the top of the browser window, next to your existing tab(s).
    • [Placeholder: Image showing the plus icon to open a new tab]
  • Switching between tabs: Click on any open tab at the top of the window to view that webpage.

  • Closing a tab: To close a tab, click the X on the right side of the tab you want to close.

Bookmarks

Bookmarks allow you to save links to your favorite or frequently visited websites, so you can easily access them later.

How to Use Bookmarks:
  • Adding a bookmark: When you’re on a website you want to save, click the star icon at the right side of the address bar. This will save the page to your bookmarks.
    • [Placeholder: Image showing the star icon to add a bookmark]
  • Accessing your bookmarks: To access your saved bookmarks, click the three dots in the upper-right corner of Chrome (called the "hamburger menu"), then select Bookmarks. You’ll see a list of all the pages you’ve saved.
    • [Placeholder: Image showing how to access bookmarks]
  • Organizing bookmarks: You can also organize your bookmarks into folders for easier access. Right-click a bookmark and choose Add to Folder to group related bookmarks together.

Using the Bookmark Toolbar

The Bookmark Toolbar is a bar just below the address bar that gives you quick access to your most important bookmarks.

How to Use the Bookmark Toolbar:
  • Enabling the toolbar: If you don’t see the toolbar, you can enable it by clicking the three dots in the upper-right corner, selecting Bookmarks, and then choosing Show bookmarks bar.
    • [Placeholder: Image showing how to enable the bookmarks bar]
  • Adding bookmarks to the toolbar: To add a bookmark to the toolbar, click the star icon to save a page as a bookmark, then choose Bookmark bar as the location.

  • Accessing bookmarks on the toolbar: Once bookmarks are saved on the toolbar, you can click them directly for quick access to your favorite websites.

Useful Settings in the Hamburger Menu

Chrome’s hamburger menu (the three dots in the upper-right corner) gives you access to important features, such as:

  • History: View a list of all the websites you’ve visited. You can access this by clicking History in the menu.
  • Downloads: See all the files you’ve downloaded by clicking Downloads.
  • Bookmarks: Manage your saved bookmarks through the Bookmarks option.

Now that you understand how to use the address bar, tabs, bookmarks, the bookmark toolbar, and key settings in Google Chrome, you’ll be able to browse the Internet more efficiently and keep your favorite websites organized.
