Windows 101: Lesson 14 - Fixing Basic Issues

In this lesson, we’ll cover how to fix some of the most common basic issues you might encounter, such as a slow network, a slow computer, or crashing programs. These simple troubleshooting steps can help you resolve issues quickly without needing technical support.

1. Slow Network

If your Internet feels slow, the first step is to restart your modem and restart your computer. This often clears up connection issues and can improve your network speed.

2. Slow Computer

If your computer is running slowly, here are a few things you can do to help speed it up:

  • Close unnecessary programs: Having too many programs running at the same time can slow your computer down. Close any programs you’re not actively using by clicking the X in the top-right corner of the program window.
  • Restart your computer: Restarting your computer can clear out temporary files and refresh system memory, which often helps with speed.
  • Check for updates: Make sure your computer is up to date by checking for Windows updates. Updates often include performance improvements that can help your computer run more smoothly.

3. Crashing Programs

If a program freezes or crashes while you’re using it, try these steps:

  • Force close the program: If a program becomes unresponsive, you can force it to close. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete on your keyboard, select Task Manager, find the program that’s not responding, and click End Task.
  • Restart the program: After force-closing a program, try reopening it. Often, a simple restart fixes the issue.
  • Check for updates: If the program keeps crashing, check if there’s an update available. Go to the program’s website or check its update settings to see if a newer version is available.

By following these basic troubleshooting steps, you can often resolve common issues like a slow network, a slow computer, or crashing programs without needing further assistance. Keeping your system and programs updated, managing open programs, and restarting devices regularly can help prevent many problems.
