How to Take a Screenshot or Snippet and Send It via Email or Slack

What is a Screenshot or Snippet? A screenshot captures the entire visible screen, while a snippet lets you select a specific area of your screen to capture. This is useful for sharing visual information quickly.

Step 1: Open Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch

  • Find the application in the Start menu.
  • Click on the Start menu icon at the bottom left of your screen. Scroll through the alphabetical list of apps to find "Snipping Tool" or "Snip & Sketch". If you see it, click on it to open. If you don't find the application in the list,
  • Search for the application.
  • Click on the Start menu icon again and type "Snipping Tool" or "Snip & Sketch" into the search bar at the bottom. When the application appears in the search results, click on it to open.

Step 2: Choose the Type of Snip

  • Select snip type.
  • In the Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch, click 'New'. You will then choose from several different types of snips:
    • Free-form Snip: Allows you to draw an irregular shape around an area to capture it. This type is useful for capturing a specific part of the screen that does not conform to standard shapes.
    • Rectangular Snip: Lets you draw a rectangle with your cursor to capture a specific area. It’s ideal for capturing menu options, toolbars, or any other content that aligns well within a rectangular shape.
    • Window Snip: This option lets you select a specific window you have open, such as a browser window or a dialog box, and captures only that window. It’s perfect when you need to capture just one window without any other parts of your screen.
    • Full-screen Snip: Captures everything visible on your screen. This is particularly useful for capturing the full display of your setup, such as your entire desktop or a full application window.
  • Use your mouse to select the area of the screen you want to capture or click on the window you wish to capture based on the selected type.

Step 3: Capture the Screenshot or Snippet

  • Take the snip.
  • Use your mouse to select the area of the screen you want to capture.

Step 4: Save the Screenshot or Snippet

  • Save the file.
  • Click the Save icon, choose a location and filename, and save the file in a format like JPEG or PNG.

Step 5: Send via Email or Slack

  • Choose your sending method.
  • To send the screenshot or snippet via email, follow steps 6 to 7. To send through Slack, skip to step 8.

Step 6: Open Your Email Application

  • Launch email client.
  • Open your preferred email application and start a new email.

Step 7: Attach the Screenshot or Snippet

  • Attach the file.
  • Click the attachment icon, navigate to where you saved your screenshot or snippet, and click 'Open' to attach it.

Step 8: Send the Email

  • Complete and send the email.
  • Fill in the recipient’s email address, add a subject, type your message, and click 'Send'.
